Summary
The Controller is responsible for the daily financial operations of the church and supervises the Financial Bookkeeper. This individual exercises sound judgment in the analysis of financial data and the preparation of financial statements and reports. The Controller also oversees select Human Resources functions, including payroll and benefits administration, compensation systems, employment offers, and external compliance and reporting. This role works closely with the Board Treasurer and Executive Staff and serves as a key member of the leadership team.
Wellspring is flexible in its approach to hiring for this important position. A highly seasoned and experienced candidate may prefer a less than full-time schedule and/or a hybrid arrangement that includes both remote and on-site work at the church.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the preparation of the annual operating budget.
- Provide periodic budget vs actuals updates to the staff.
- Responsible for the monthly close
- Produce month financial package for the Board of Directors
- Manage and process payroll.
- Manage Accounts Payable process, including weekly check processes.
- Complete Balance Sheet review with the audit committee twice each year
- In coordination with the Audit Committee, lead the planning and be the point person for the annual audit/review.
- Working with the Audit Committee, support the writing, reviewing, and maintenance of accounting policies, procedures, and business processes.
- Assist in the design, implementation, and periodic review of internal control over accounting transactions.
- Keep current on compensation systems, surveys and changing trends.
Qualifications
- BS in Accounting/Finance
- 5-10 years of progressive experience as an accountant
- Non-profit experience preferred.
